The Fortress of Pietracassia, one of the oldest and most important castles in Tuscany, is located on the ridge that divides the Val di Cecina from the Val d'Era. The tower, located at the highest point of the structure, was a valid control point on the road that runs along the river Sterza, connecting the Val d'Era with the Val di Cecina. Hikers can enjoy an almost 360-degree panorama: from the sea from the coast of Livorno to the Apuan Alps, from the Pisan Mountains to Alta Valdera. The environmental characteristics of the territory offer countless possibilities for observing the local fauna and flora, in addition to the wonderful landscape of the Pisan hills. The tour starts in the medieval town of Orciatico (sec. VII) built entirely in Alberese stone with one of the most beautiful panoramic terraces in the Tuscany region. Passing through the city, we will take a trail of uncontaminated and wild vegetation until we reach a small stream of crystal clear water and an oak forest. We will cross the forest that gives access to another trail to the Fortress of Pietracassia. The return will be made by an opposite trail, descending in the middle of the vegetation that will take us to "Mofeta de Borboi". A natural geothermal phenomenon that happens in the Orciatico region. Finally, we will travel along a "white" road through the hills of Orciatico, until we reach our starting point.
- Booking: Reservations are necessary for organizational reasons and third-party insurance (RTC), and must be done by electronic means (e-mail) or phone.
- Maximum forecast of 12 participants. In case of shortage of places, the tour will be repeated. The same is true in case of bad weather.
- Kids: Not recommended for children under 14 years old.
- Dogs: Only if tied to the collar due to the presence of wild animals in the region.
- **Is required** use of closed sneakers (preferably trekking) with good grip to avoid slipping on wet rocks and foliage during the course.
