Bishop's Castle

Bishop's Castle - Berignone (Val di Cecina)

Course Description

The trail runs along the southern edge of the Berignone Forest Nature Reserve, in a landscape of great naturalist and historical interest. An old road at the bottom of the valley provides access to the "Castello dei Vescovi", or "Torraccia", one of the most important medieval sites in the Volterra area. Ideal for families and people with disabilities, the trail can also be covered by horse or mountain bike. The route is facilitated by the presence of some spaces for rest, accessible to all, and by a wide, flat and beaten path located, for the most part, in the shade of fresh woods. The encounter with vast forests and wild fauna, the recognition of the most typical trees in the area and the observation of countless geological evidences are some of the most characteristic experiences of this route. But the central element remains the discovery of the fluvial ecosystem, with its typical riverside vegetation and countless species of animals and plants. A discovery facilitated by the possibility of making your way back along the banks of the river Sellate, stopping to observe the numerous testimonies of aquatic life up close.
